Sasha Kurmaz (b. 1986) in Kyiv, Ukraine. He holds a Master’s degree in Design from the National Academy of Managerial Staff of
Culture and Arts in Kyiv in 2008.
Sasha is an interdisciplinary artist. He uses photography, video, artist’s book production, various forms of collaborative and participatory practices, performative interaction, and intervention in public space in his artistic practice. His work focuses on urban space, society, its development, and transformations, collective and personal trauma, the impact of war on personal and group identities, and the dynamics of relationships between the individual and the power structures.
Kurmaz has participated in many international group exhibitions and festivals, including exhibitions at W139 (Netherlands), Zamek Ujazdowski (Poland), ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art (Germany), Künstlerhaus Vienna (Austria), Saatchi Gallery (UK), Skovde Art Museum (Sweden), C/O Berlin (Germany), NRW-Forum Düsseldorf (Germany), Galeria Arsenał (Poland), Latvian Museum of Photography (Latvia), DOX Centre for Contemporary Art (Czech Republic), Museum de Fundatie (the Netherlands), Albertinum – Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Germany).
Has held residencies at HIAP (Finland), Akademie der Künste (Germany), Villa Sträuli (Switzerland), and received the C/O Berlin Talent Award 2016 (Germany), the Kazimir Malevich Artist Award 2020 (Poland/Ukraine), and the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2023 (Switzerland).
